Bathroom Remodel in Joliet, IL

It may seem like a silly question, but how do you use your bathroom?  When considering remodeling the bathroom, it’s a key question that needs to be answered.  While some people view the bathroom as simply a utilitarian tool, used only for brushing teeth and a quick shower, others use the space to relax and unwind for hours.

Your specific needs and uses should dictate how your new bathroom will look and flow.  A few things to consider are:
  • What is the primary use for this space?  The features of a master bathroom will vary greatly from the features needed in a powder room or guest bathroom.
  • Do you want a shower and bath in the space, or just one or the other?
  • How many people tend to use the bathroom at one time?  This will dictate how many sinks and showerheads you need, the size of the vanity, and other features.
  • Consider how long you may be living in the home to determine if you’ll need to take measures that will allow you to age in place (a raised height toilets, accessible tub, grab bars, etc.)
  • Will everything you want and/or need in the space require expanding the footprint of the space?

A Tip from the Experts

"The bathroom should be much more than a utilitarian tool used to get ready in the morning and brush your teeth before bed.  When designed correctly, this room should be a place where one can comfortably prepare for the day as well as a relaxing place to unwind and wash away stresses from the day.  It can make as much of a design statement as a kitchen and other key parts of the home, and we want to help you achieve that when you're remodeling the bathroom." - Owner, Joliet Home Remodeling

Determining the Bathroom Type

Bathrooms fall in to one of a few categories and determining which type will help dictate the decisions of your bathroom remodel:
Master – Generally the workhorse of the bathrooms, the master is used on a daily basis, often by more than one person.  It tends to be the largest bathroom in a multi-bathroom home, and since it is often used by the home’s owners, it is often where the biggest chunk of bathroom improvement budget is spent since it tends to need a larger vanity, multiple sinks, and other features that other bathrooms don’t.

Guest or Full – Guest and full bathrooms have a sink, toilet, and shower/tub.  Full bathrooms are usually used by home occupants that are not the owners, such as children or relatives.  Guest bathrooms are used on a more infrequent basis, usually just by guests.  Since full baths are used often, a large amount of a remodeling budget is often put towards their improvement.  On the flip side, some people choose to save money by outfitting a guest bath with more economy-level finishes or take more time to improve it since it’s not as necessary as other bathrooms.

Powder – Sometimes called a half bath, a powder room contains a toilet and sink.  It’s generally used for convenience when occupants aren’t near another bathroom in the home.  While the remodeling process of a powder room is quick due to its small size, it’s usually the last bathroom to be improved since there are others that are used more often.

Making a List of Wants and Desires

Once you’ve established a list of needs, you can put together a list of wants.  Look through magazines, visit showrooms, or check out local model homes to get inspiration and decide what you’d like to incorporate into your new bathroom.  If the list is long, consider putting them in order of importance should incorporating everything prove not to be feasible.

Setting a Budget

Your budget will determine how drastic your bathroom renovation can be.  Small budgets may dictate smaller changes, such as cosmetic-only updates.  Larger budgets may allow room for gutting, moving walls, or other structural changes.  A good rule of thumb is that that the more walls that require plumbing, the more expensive a remodel will cost.  Keeping a bathroom’s original layout intact will usually be the least expensive route, though in cases where plumbing is very old and needing to be brought up to code, starting from scratch may be necessary.

Before remodeling a bathroom, Joliet Home Remodeling can help discuss your various options and help you establish a budget.  It’s always smart to set aside an additional amount, up to 10% to cover any unexpected issues that may arise, such as mold issues.
