Home Remodeling, Window Replacement in Joliet, IL

There are many reasons why people may choose to do remodel part of all of their home.  Their home may be old and outdated.  They may have looked at homes on the market but couldn’t find a good fit.  It may be time to sell their home, but it needs major improvements to get it market ready.  No matter the reason, there are numerous decisions to be made, so we recommend having a solid plan in place before anything else.  This involves:
  • Making a list of your needs and wants in order of priority.
  • Deciding which parts of the house are going to be renovated. Decide if you want to keep the existing footprint of the house, or if additional rooms, stories, or other structural changes need to be made.
  • Honing-in on a style and design.  Use magazines, model homes, and home improvement stores for inspiration.  If you have plans to resell within a few years, stay away from uber-trendy designs that will quickly become outdated and make it hard to sell your home.
  • Determining your budget.  The cost to remodel a home varies greatly.  Generally, the more demolition and structural changes needed, and the higher-end the fixtures and finishes, the more expensive the project will be.  If what you have to work with isn’t enough to cover the costs, a home equity loan can help.  Additionally, some clients will look for suppliers who will allow them to make payments over the course of months or years.  Experts recommend adding about 10% to your budget as a contingency to account for unforeseen issues that may arise mid-project.

A Tip from the Experts

"Many of the jobs we take on involve fixing a DIY project gone wrong.  Everyone loves watching those popular home improvement shows on TV, but often fail to realize that most of what they see is portrayed is not realistic.  Homeowners on those shows have the help and backing of a professional team, making an even a very difficult project seem simple.  We recommend you always call us to help before remodeling a home to ensure everything goes smoothly." - Owner, Joliet Home Remodeling
Remember to plan for the future. If a home is do be renovated in stages, care must be taken with each phase to ensure nothing will negatively affect future work.  Additionally, homeowners must consider how current changes will impact future living.  As your family changes, the improvements you make now should be able to accommodate changes in dynamics, such as children growing up, owners getting older, or growing/shrinking numbers of occupants. No matter the size of your remodeling project, from a whole-house renovation to window replacement in Joliet, Illinois, we've got you covered!

The Remodeling Process

Every project is different, but most home renovation jobs follow a pretty standard set of steps, designed to make the job as efficient as possible:
  • Demolition/gutting: Before new things can go in, the old must come out. The demolition process can be as simple as ripping out carpet, to as complex as tearing out whole parts of the house.  This can take says or weeks depending on the complexity of the job.
  • Reconstruction: When demolition is complete, things can be rebuilt.  This is the stage where new framing, windows, and doors will be put in place.  In the case of room additions, the roof and other exterior components will go in.
  • Mechanicals: At this point, everything required to make fixtures and appliances in a home operate correctly will be put in place, including electrical, plumbing, gas, and HVAC.
  • Walls: With mechanicals in, insulation can now be put in place, and the walls can be enclosed with drywall.
  • Floor: Hardwood, tile, carpet, or whatever other floor covering you choose will be put in.  This step can happen before or after drywall and paint.
  • Fixtures and finishes: One of the most exciting parts of the process comes now, when cabinets, appliances, and plumbing fixtures, and countertops will be installed.
  • Final details: The last details will go in, such as lighting, backsplash, shelves, and hardware.
  • Clean up: Paint touch ups and a final clean will be completed
